Ninja Ranks in Naruto

Looking for Ninja Ranks in Naruto? I review the different levels that a ninja can have in Naruto and the responsibilities and duties that this entails.

“Naruto” is a franchise that has been making a strong impact around the world for many years. Part of this success is due to the detailed design of its world, with a lot of hidden countries and villages. It also stands out for its large number of characters and the jutsus they can use.

Today, I’m going to talk to you about another example of how well thought out everything is in “Naruto”: the hierarchy of ninjas and all the existing levels. Do you know all this tangle of levels well? I explain them in detail below, as Sakura tells us in the extra of EP 38 of “Naruto Shippuden” (starting at minute 22:18).

How many ninja ranks are there in Naruto?

There are 6 ranks in Naruto:

  • Genin
  • Chuunin
  • Special Jonin
  • Jonin
  • Anbu
  • Hokage

The hierarchy and ranks of ninjas in Naruto

These are the different “levels” that a ninja can have. I will order them from lowest to highest. To move from one to the other, you have to pass complicated exams in which ninjas must demonstrate their skills.

Genin

  • Low-level ninjas, with abilities and skills that are yet to be developed.
  • It is the rank that someone obtains as soon as they become a ninja.
  • Naruto and his friends became Genin as soon as they got their forehead protector, something that Konohamaru and his companions also achieved a few years later.

Chuunin

  • Mid-level ninjas, with good skills but still room for improvement.
  • Reaching this rank gives them the ability to lead Genin teams.
  • Shikamaru was the first of the young protagonists to reach this level, although the rest of Naruto’s friends already had it at the beginning of “Naruto Shippuden”.

Special Jonin

  • High-level ninjas, although with very specific skills.
  • So much so that they work on very specific missions and situations.
  • A good example is Ibiki, who, as we can see in the anime, is an expert in interrogations. We also have Ebisu, an expert in discipline, among others.

Jonin

  • Elite ninjas with very high-level techniques.
  • Due to the great skill required to become one, their number is scarce.
  • Some of the best-known Jonin in the series are Kakashi, Gay, Asuma, and Kurenai. The first of the young protagonists to reach this rank was Neji.

Anbu

  • The Anbu Corps is made up of ninjas with extraordinary abilities.
  • The main difference with other ranks is that their work is often shrouded in absolute secrecy.
  • Its members wear masks with their faces hidden, and their identities are kept secret.
  • The Anbu skip the hierarchy, and obey and report only to the Hokage.
  • Ninjas like Kakashi or Yamato have belonged to the Anbu Corps.

Hokage

  • The supreme authority of a Hidden Village.
  • The name of the position changes depending on the village: in the Leaf he is called Hokage, in the Sand he is known as Kazekage, etc.
  • Because he is the highest person in the hierarchy and the one who commands everyone else, only extraordinary ninjas can hold this position.
  • Such outstanding characters as Master Sarutobi or Tsunade have held this title. Achieving this title is Naruto’s dream throughout the series.

And that’s it for this short article in which I review the ninja hierarchy established in “Naruto”. What rank do you think you could reach? I’ll read you in the comments!
